Color variation of wood flooring

Color variation of wood flooring

More and more people are fond of wood flooring for their houses, because of its comfort and leisure to houses. However, most of people find it very hard to accept the natural color variation of wood flooring, which they believe would destroy the overall decoration effect for their houses. Thus people would be very fastidious about the perfect and clean color of wooden floors when deciding the flooring for their houses, in order to get perfect wooden floors without any color variation.
As a professional wooden floors manufacturer and supplier, Chancelier Wood Flooring here would like to introduce all information about wooden floors color variation, in a professional way.

1.the color variation of wooden floors

Color variation means the variation or difference between two colors. The color is determined in 3 main features: color tonecolor saturation and color gloss. Color variation is a reflection of difference among these three aspects for one certain color. When customers go to the wooden floors shops, choosing the wooden floors for their houses, they find that nearly all the wooden floors look a little different in colors, some of them in light color, some of them in darker color. Such a phenomenon in wooden floor color is exactly the color variation of wood flooring.

2.solid hardwood flooring has more obvious color variation?

Compared to laminate wooden floors and engineered wooden floorssolid hardwood flooringdefinitely has more obvious color variation. Solid hardwood flooring is produced with 100% realtimber plank of one wood species, which is influenced by sunlight during tree growth and the colors of heartwood and sapwood look different: heartwood color usually is a little darker than sapwood color. As a result, solid hardwood flooring unavoidable appear color variation conditions.

3.why there is color variation for wooden floors?

1) Natural factor:  during tree growth in the forest, the wood is majorly influenced by weather change, sunlight shining and soil conditions. Thus the woods from the same area appear a little color variation because of the slight influence of natural factors; even for one piece of wood, the wood grain and wood color also appear little different. Heartwood, inside the cutting end, is darker; sapwood, outside the cutting end, looks lighter.
2) Installation factor: as wooden floors has color variation, installation workers should select the color among the wooden floors and install those flooring planks with similar color together, or put those floor planks with obvious color variation to hidden places. Or else, the wooden flooring installed without color selecting and matching looks more obvious in color variation.
3) Environment factor: usually the wood flooring near windows looks brighter or lighter than the flooring in dark site, as sunlight gets inside the house from windows and makes the flooring near windows lighter & brighter.

4.color variation of wood flooring is a quality issue ?

laminate wooden flooring is an artificial wood flooring, with HDF material and wood grain paper, thus laminate wooden flooring has no wood color variation. Engineered wood flooring and solid hardwood flooring, are all real wood floorings, with its natural color determined by natural environments. As a result, it is not reasonable to require engineered wood flooring and solid hardwood flooring without any wood color variation, which is a natural phenomenon of wood. Even in National Quality Standard for wood flooring, there is also not specific requirement on wood color variation. Little wood color variation for wood floorings is acceptable and more natural in looking.

How to solve the issue of wood floor color variation?

In order to avoid the obvious color variation of wood flooring to influence the overall decoration effect for the house, we suggest that wood flooring should be installed for the 1sttime as trial installation. During trial installation, selecting flooring planks with similar colors and install these flooring planks gradually from light color to dark color. Put those flooring planks with big color variation to the site for sofa, kitchen or beds. This will decrease the looking effect of wood color variation.

What are engineered hardwood floors

What are engineered hardwood floors

Engineered hardwood floors are made of valuable hardwood veneers attached to the plywood planks which are comprised of crossed-line wood layers. The valuable hardwood veneers are pressed by high-power machines to the plywood plank base and processed by automatic UV lacquer coating machines for the anti-scratch UV lacquer coating.
Engineered hardwood floor has high resistance against deformation or cracking; the unavoidable shrinking and expanding nature of hardwood is not obvious in engineered hardwood floors. Compared to ceramic tiles, engineered flooring has better features in balancing the indoor moisture and temperature; more importantly, theunique natural wood grain is incomparable in beauty. The installation is very easy, even in DIY way, owing to its quick-lock joint. or easy-lock joints.
The price of engineered hardwood floors are higher than  the price of ceramic tiles and laminate wooden floors, but much lower than solid hardwood flooring price, probably only 50%-60%, especially for rare &valuable hardwood flooring, such as teak flooring, wenge flooring or rosewood flooring.
One of the outstanding advantage of engineered hardwood floors are its application to under heating floor system, without any deformation or cracking, which might occur to solid hardwood flooring installed on under heating system.
engineered hardwood floors
The top wood veneers of engineered hardwood floors are classified in to two types: popular hardwood veneer, rare and valuable hardwood veneer.The common points of these hardwood veneers for engineered floors are the balance between the protection of endangered hardwood resources and people’s pursuit of the natural wood grain beauty and the natural wood color.
The most popular engineered hardwood floors are including, European oak engineered flooring, merbauengineered flooring, walnutengineered flooring, birch engineered flooring, maple engineered flooring & hickory engineered flooring.
The favorably luxurious and rare engineered hardwood floors include teak engineered floors, rosewood engineered flooring, ebony engineered flooring etc.
As luxury engineered hardwood floors are usually made by 0.6mm or 1.2mm thick hardwood veneerdue to the price, in smooth surface and natural wood color. Many people prefer thicker wood veneer, such as 2.0mm, 3.0mm, 4.0mm even 6.0mm, so that they could sand the flooring and renew the color and surface in future.
As a result, many engineered hardwood floors manufacturers, like Chancelier Wood Flooring, produce the popular engineered hardwood floors like engineered oak flooring in all types of colors, finishing to match the market demand for different colors and finishing. For example, flooring finishing are classified into smooth surface, brushed finishing, hand scraped finishing, distress finishing, antique finishing, brushed & scraped finishing…; the colors are classified into natural wood color, limed white color, smoked oak color, grey oak color, dark color, black color, or mixture of colors in brushed finishing and hand scraped finishing.
engineered hardwood floors base material
Multi-ply engineered hardwood flooring,themasterwork of technology development in human being history, completely has changed the traditions and the ideas about wood flooring. Its plywood base is comprised of crossed-lined ordinary hardwood boards, pressed by high-pressure machines. This cross-line multi ply structure has perfect balancing point in its interior stress, decreasing the possibility of wood deformation, wiping off the features of shrinking in dry conditions and expanding in wet conditions. Therefor, this multi-ply structure brings excellent stability, durability & good resistance againstheating & moisture to engineered hardwood floors.

The classification of engineered flooring in strip wood veneer
One strip engineered hardwood floors:
The wood veneer on top of engineered flooring is one full plank veneer, not 2 strips or 3 strips attachedtogether.
Most of people prefer one strip engineered hardwood floors, which present the unique beauty of natural hardwood grains and color, offering the feelings walking in the amazing forest.
 One strip engineered hardwood floors
twostrip engineered hardwood floors:
the top wood layer is consisting of two strips of narrow veneer, with clear lines between the strips.
the specialties of two strip engineered hardwood floors have as follow: the cost and the sense of hierarchy or lines. The cost of two-strip engineered flooring is around 20%-30% lower in cost than one strip engineered flooring. The colorful looking and different wood grain lines provide a strong sense of animation in the house, never old-fashion style. Thus two-strip engineered floors are uaually made of wood species with greatly wavy wood grain, such as white oak or red oak hardwood, ash hardwood, Brazilian cherry hardwood.
twostrip engineered hardwood floors
the multi-strips engineered wood flooring
there is another name for this flooring, which is finelineengineered wood flooring. Multi-strips floorings are usually made from oak wood, padauk wood, teak wood & black walnut wood. All these hardwood species have beautiful waves in wood grain and very attractive colors. The warm & golden color of oak, padauk and teak wood is a symbol color of royal family, representing the high-class level and elegant life of the house owners. The attractive color variation and mosaic parquet style result in an artistic feeling of lines in the flooring. This finelineengineered wood floors are always the favorable option for the little amount of people with artistic minds.
multi-strips engineered wood flooring
classification of engineered hardwood floors in coating
1 UV lacquerengineered hardwood floors
this type of engineered floors is processed by automatic Ultra-Violet coating machines, with the resins dried by UV light within 0.1second. This UV coating lacquer is much better than PU coating in anti scratch& hardness, but weak in adhesive force. Besides, this UV coating is dried to a solid film together in less than 0.1second, thus the coating itself would not has rip lines or cracking.
Oiled engineered hardwood floors:
This wood top layer of engineered floors is coated with natural wood oil, which could penetrate into the wood surface. This oiled coating is much thinner than UV coating lacquer, giving a soft and fine feeling of raw wood surface. When people walk on this oiled flooring or touch it, the feeling is the touching against the real wood, not the lacquer itself.
 classification of engineered hardwood floors in coating 1 UV lacquerengineered hardwood floors
engineered hardwood floors pros and cons

1 excellent stability:
with the cross-line plywood structure, engineered hardwood floors are very stable in dimensions, no deformation and cracking after years of installation, even in sever weather conditions. This excellentstability makes engineered hardwood floors the best option for under heating system.
2 better price:
Engineered hardwood floors cost is determined by the thickness of top wood layer and the top layer wood species, as the plywood from cheap wood species is much lower in cost than the 100% timber hardwood floors. 100% solid timber floors are usually 18mm thick while engineered hardwood floors are only 1.2mm or 2.0mm thick in top wood layer. As a result, the price of engineered floors is much competitive than solid timber floors.
3 easy maintenance
engineered hardwood floors are usually prefinishedsurface, with high anti scratchlacquer or good resistance against scratch. After installation, there is no need for specialmaintenance for this flooring, such as waxing or sanding for renew. Waxing one time per 3 years is good enough.
4 high cost effective
After installation, engineered hardwood floors look same and feel same as solidhardwood floors, with 20%-30% lower in price. That means engineered hardwood floors have better cost performance in same quality. That is why now engineered flooring is more and more popular around the world now, a development of technology in human society.
5 easy installation.
Just like laminate wooden floors, installingengineered wood floors does not require the wooden joists upon the concrete floors. Only make sure the concrete flooring is even, with the waterproofunderlayer on top of it. That is the poplar floatinginstallation way now, quick and economical.

Simple introduction of oak wood features

What is oak wood

Oak wood,with scientific name of quercus spp,is mostly growing the tropical zones of the Northern Earth, such as northern Americas, East Asia and East Europe.As China does not allow the logging of oak for commercial use, most of oak wood planks are imported from Russia, Europe and USA.

Oak wood density:750g/cm3

Oak wood hardness:1360psi

the features of oak hardwood:

1 heartwood of oak has huge difference in color with sapwood

heartwood is a little brown, between yellowish brown and dark brown;

oak sapwood is usually white color, with a little yellow;

2 oak wood has very clear wood annual rings, and very beautifule wood grain;

oak wood grain looks very mountains or sea waves, with small shooting rays of dark brown,

3 density and hardness is moderate high, compared with brazilian teak or ipe,

4 oak wood surface is very fine and smooth, and it is easy to get staining,

Usually, oak wood is divided in two two types: white oak wood and red oak wood. As white oak is not really white and red oak is not really red, it is very difficult for ordinary people to identify the difference of which oak and red oak.

The main difference in white oak and red oak is the application.

Red oak is mostly suitable for wood furnitures and wood doors,wood flooring;

White oak is usually suitble for wood barrel for wine,hardwood flooring.

the advantage of oak wood

1 oak wood has clear beautiful mountain wood grain, and the wood surface feels very fine and smooth;

2 is impelling toughness is very excellent, oak wood could be made into kinds of beautiful curving wood items ;

3 oak is very hard with high density, with good stability in dimension, thus it is very resistant against rotting and the lifetime of oak wood could be nearly a hundred years.

4 with its beauty in grain and high density,oak wood is a very good material for high end wood furnitures, both in european style and Chinese traditional style;

5 on account to its high hardness, oak wood is not easy to be sawn,sanded and processed like other wood, such as ash wood, elm wood.

6 oak wood is more and more precious now after the logging of oak wood in big amount in the recent 100 years.

The disadvantage of oak wood

1 there is very few amount of oak hardwood with high grades, most of the oak hardwood has big tree knots,cracks and color difference.

2 sapwood of oak is vulnerable to worms and borer;

3 oak wood, if not kiln drying properly, would shrink and get cracking very easily;

4 Oak wood, looks like ash wood or chestnut wood. It is difficult for people to identify oak wood, ash wood and chestnut wood.

Usually oak wood from France and Russia is top quality, with little knots, oak wood from USA is in the middle level, and european oak wood from european is of low grade, with lots of knots,cracks and color difference.

Durability of engineered wood flooring

Durability of engineered wood flooring

 by Chancelier Wood Flooring

  www.artparquet-woodflooring.com

engineered wood flooring is made by wood top layer and plywood material. as the plywood structure is consisting of several layers of wood veneer pressed by high-power machines, engineered wood flooring is totally different from solid hardwood flooring, without one-direction of wood grain. in the aspect of shrinking & expanding with moisture, and the dimension stability, engineered flooring definitely has better performance than hardwood flooring. Besides, engineered wooden floors achieves the same impression of beauty for the wood grain as hardwood flooring, and it also provides same feeling of walking to people , as hardwood flooring.
With same stability of laminate flooring and beauty of hardwood flooring, engineered wood flooring becomes more and more popular around the world now.

The factors to influence the durability of engineered wood flooring
Before we discuss the durability of engineered wood flooring, we need to know well the details of engineered wood flooring.

1 Wood species for the top layer
With different wood species as top layer for engineered wood floors,  the hardness of engineered wood flooring will be very different, for example, birch is very soft and brazilian teak is almost the hardest wood, with janka hardness 1260psi and 3300psi. Birch engineered flooring thus feels much softer than brazilian teak engineered flooring. After several years, brazilian teak engineered flooring would look better and feel better than birch engineered flooring , as people walk on it with shoes for years.
as a result, wood species for engineered wooden floors is one of the factors to influence the durability of engineered wood flooring.

2 Quality of lacquer or oil for flooring coating
Most of the engineered wood floorings are pre-finished with UV lacquer or UV oil by the engineered wood flooring manufacturers. The quality of lacquer or oil coating is the most important factors to engineered flooring durability.
 If the quality of lacquer of oil is poor, the flooring coating will probably occur to these potential problem:
   lacquer failure at parts of the flooring boards,
   lacquer cracking,
   lacquer uneven surface,
   lacquer de-bonding days after installation
With such lacquer problem, those engineered wood flooring undoubtedly needs reparing, or even are less any more.
On the other hand, with excellent lacquer quality, engineered wood flooring would be as good as new even after several years, without need for re-finishing for coating for 5-10 years.

3 Quality of plywood material
Plywood material has better stability in dimension than solid wood flooring, but the multi-layer plywood is made of several layers bonded by glue. So quality of plywood material and the glue quality for the plywood material would be the 2nd important factor to engineered flooring durability.
With installation on concrete flooring, the moisture in concrete flooring will have an effect on the back of engineered flooring year by year, although the concrete floor would be processed with waterproof treatment for wood flooring on top.
In some cold area, people will install engineered wood flooring above the under hearing system, which would be turned on in winter,then the floorings would be heated as well. The qualified plywood material for engineered wood flooring will not be glue de-bonding in such circumstances.
Those plywood materials which could pass the bonding strength testing ( soaking in boilding water for 2 hours),are qualified in such situation.

4 Good maintenance to the flooring
Although engineered wood flooring is new product with high technology,  its wood property still require people to use , maintain them as real hardwood flooring
   waxing every 6 months,
   mopping without dipping water,
   no dragging for heavy articles on it,
   keep flooring and house as dry as possible
Without good maintenance, even the best quality engineered wood flooring will not have durable performance, and probably needs repairing several months after installation.

According to the above knowledge about the factors to durability of engineered wood flooring, we thus shall pay great attention to these factors before we make decisions during buying engineered wood flooring for our new houses.

How to choose engineered wood flooring

How to choose engineered wood flooring
by Chancelier Wood Flooring

1 choose the suitable type
  there are two types of engineered wood flooring, 3 layer engineered wood flooring & mutiply engineered wood flooring.
  Usually, mutiply engineered wood flooring have better performance in stability due to the structure of plywood base. On the other hand, 3 layer engineered wood flooring is comparatively cheaper and more environmental friendly.
  we should choose the most suitable type for us based on our situations, such as the weather, the moisture of local area,etc.

2  Choose the favorable wood species for top layer of engineered flooring
  engineered wood floorings are also named with the wood species of its top layer, such as oak engineered wood flooring, teak engineered wood flooring, Brazilian cherry engineered wood flooring, doussie engineered wood flooring, even rosewood engineered wood flooring.
  the wood species of flooring top layer is different, there is huge difference in price, wood color and wood grain for the different timber woods. those valuable and rare timber woods are very expensive, such as wenge wood, ebony,palo santos wood, rosewood, even teak wood and walnut wood.
  Before deciding the best engineered wood flooring for ourselves, we need to consider the wood color, the wood grain and the size of engineered flooring, and then finally figure out the price of the
favorable wood species to us.
3 Check the moisture content of engineered wood flooring
  the moisture content of engineered flooring is very critical to the stability of the flooring boards. We must keep an eye on this factor before determining the engineered flooring supplier for our homes: the moisture content of engineered flooring has to be from 8%-12%.
  If Moisture of flooring is higher than this rate, the flooring boards will definitely bend.

4 Check the precision of process technic on the products
   We introduce a very simple way to check the flooring process technic, which would  present the supplier’s production quality control standard:
   To install the engineered flooring boards for around 10-15 pieces on the floor, then we could check these installed flooring boards with our eyes and hands:
    whether these engineered wood floorings are all smooth without defect in lacquer;
    all the joints are smooth and connected well;
    all the bevels are clean and smooth between the joints;
below is the international standard for the flooring board details:
    the gap between two adjacent flooring boards is less than 0.15mm in average,
    the height difference between two adjacent flooring boards is less than 0.10mm in average.

5 check the grade of top layer wood veneer
    the quality of wood veneer determines the grades of engineered wood flooring, such as A grade, AB grade, ABC grade, ABCD grade, CD grade and CDE grade.
    we need to figure out the supplier’s grading standard for wood veneer, as price is very different for its different grades,
    firstly, we need to check if all the wood veneers of engineered floorings are of one wood species, such as burma teak engineered flooring is with burma teak wood lamella, not with indonesian teak lamell, or oak engineered flooring is with oak veneer, not with ash veneer;
    secodnly, we need to check the knots, the cracks in the wood veneer based on the grading we choose for our flooring, A grade is A grade, not including AB grade; ABC grade is ABC grade only, never including ABCD grade;
   thirdly, we also need to check the quality of UV lacquer on top, to make sure whether it is all smooth, clean and feels fine. There would be no crack, no small bubble , no dot in lacquer.
  finally, we shall check if the wearing layer of UV lacquer is strong enough for scratching. this is a very important factor of the engineered wood flooring performance after installation.

6 Choose the ECO engineered wood flooring
The production of engineered wood flooring involves urea-formaldehyde resin. as a result, formaldehyde will be unavoidable in engineered flooring. As we know, formaldehyde is poisonous to human body if people absorb over amount of formaldehyde. If the content of formaldehyde is kept with a certain little amount in the air, people will not find any danger of this material to the bodies.
Based on the international standard for formaldehyde emission, the engineered wood flooring is qualified as ECO product or GREEN product with formaldehyde emission less than 1.5g/ML.

7 Check the bonding strength
The bonding strength is a very important quality indicator to the engineered wood flooring, having a  direct influence on the usage and lifespan of this product.
The bonding strength test is very easy:  put a small sample of engineered flooring into water and boil the water along with the sample  in 70℃ for 2 hours and check the plywood layer is still bonding together or debonding. Only those engineered flooring passing this boding strength test, are qualified products.
   We, Chancelier Wood Flooring,only use the qualified plywood with E1 grade as the material for our engineered wood flooring.
